Sunday Stills ~ Fall Foliage

Sunday Stills is a place to hone your photography skills. Each Week Ed issues a new “Challenge” that gives us the opportunity to pick up what ever kind of camera we own and try and meet it. This week's challenge is fall foliage.

Fall is my favorite time of year. Any other year, I would have had a number of pictures to choose from. But this year in Nebraska, we got robbed of fall. Winter snuck it's head in the door and planted several inches of snow on our changing trees. Then a week of rain every other day, finished them off. No fall. No Indian summer. Outside it looks (and feels like) gray November.

I only hope that November will pay us back for the gloomy October. But for some reason, I don't think we'll be so lucky. I think winter just plain came early and we are paying it back for having a wonderful summer.

It started out brilliantly, then a blanket of snow and a blink of an eye, and it was gone.

  3. Thanks, Mindee. The last one was taken this morning AFTER I published this blog. I turned around & looked out the window & the sunrise was breathtakingly beautiful! Grabbed my camera and snapped a few while trying to ward of my St Bernard who was so happy to see me this morning! And this was what I got...

Loved the first shot! Fall color in snow, how unusual. :)

  6. Oh darn...I hate when that happens! We've been pretty lucky to have a nice fall so far, but our gloomy November is just around the corner. I was lucky to get a good ride in on my horse yesterday without freezing, which was nice! I love your shots. I hope you have a beautiful spring and summer to make up for your early winter! :)

  7. Could not believe my eyes when I saw that first shot. Imagine snow under a tree in fall colours. Amazing. You are right, you were robbed!

  9. Some very nice shots; the second one almost looks like a photoshop of a close up of grass, with the horse and rider pasted in! Good shot!

  10. Yes, you were robbed, but what happened to your area this year is the norm for us every year.

I especially don't like Fall in New Mexico because where we live all we see is green all year long (from the pinons and junipers). To see any color we have to go above our 7,000 ft and then all we see most of is yellow (from the Aspens and Cottonwoods). And if we close our eyes, it's over in an instant. Fall only lasts at the most a week, maybe two.

Your photo of the red leafed tree surrounded by snow is really pretty and stark. Well done!

  13. The first photo is just so adorable! A lone red maple tree standing amidst the snow! Brilliant capture.

We do not get that much foliage unless you drive up in the winding road up 8000 feet elevation!

  14. Love the second shot of the horse ut riding!

Sorry you were robbed of fall, but it still seems pretty there! We had a bit more color than usual here in the northwest; freeze followed by heat created a wonderful pallet. Of course, it's raining now and will all be a soggy mess all too soon!

  16. The yellow color of the leaves make me wish some of them would turn to gold.

The ivy clad building changes color according to the seasons. I did a separate post today.
